A Good Tip For A Better Trophy
In preserving your big game trophy, follow these simple rules.
Begin by making a circular cut at base of neck, including par of the shoulders and brisket. This will assure a good shoulder mount. Cut skin upward, always on the back of the neck, NEVER IN FRONT, hair on neck is longer and will cover the mounting stitches. Cut off ears as close to the skull as possible. At this point, make a "Y" shaped incision, as shown in the diagram, peeling cape around antlers down toward eyes and mouth. Be extremely careful not to cut holes in skin, especially around the eyes, lips and nose. Salting the hide with regular table salt will be helpful, but REMEMBER, if possible, deliver the hide to the taxidermist within 24 hours. A lean hide will keep longer; flesh and fat will spoil rapidly.
